SAILOR LEO

This was my submission for ’s Sailor Zodiac contest: [link]

The idea was to create a Sailor Senshi according to one’s zodiac sign.
Although I quite dislike zodiac and astrology in general, I’m quite fond of the Sailor Moon Universe, and I also love all the imagery surrounding the Leo concept. And being a Leo myself, is just natural that I know something about my sign, even though I rarely (never) read the horoscope.
Anyway, the contest tempted me, and even though I *really* had no time to spend on her I decided to create something just for the sheer fun and pleasure of doing it.

I believe I should have dedicated her more time, and my lack of experience shows. This is just my second full digital colouring, and the first one using a lineart of my own. I guess she should have ended a better illustration if had more time, but most of all if I knew how to really draw. I dislike some of the colouring, and I guess some special effects were not well achieved at all. Besides, there were symbols/elements related to Leo that I didn’t use at all… (Ok.. you guessed: I’m a huge and incurable perfectionist ^^¡ )

Birthday: August 7th (yep, my own ^^ )
Birthstone: Ruby

ATTACKS: Actually, she has three attack techniques:
Deadly Roar, which is very similar to Sailor Pluto’s “Deadly Scream” since they both learned and developed the technique at the same time when they were children and spent some time playing in the kindergarten. This is a basic attack. Rarely used, since most enemies use to flee when they see how Leo’s red eyes start glowing.
Sunflower Protection Glow which is a defensive technique that can span from 2 – 15 meters (6-45 ft) to protect Leo or any other person near to her from enemy attack
Lightining Supernova Claws, the biggest and deadliest of her techniques. It’s an all-destructing attack used as last resource. Here a big supernova explosion originates from her heart, destroying and purifying all evil in a 1 year-light radius. This does not affect other Sailor Scouts or people with pure heart, but causes Leo to be self-destructed (she will reborn again from the inner core of the remaining star after the supernova explosion). Fortunately there has never been the need to use it.

Likes: all that’s elegant. Classic music, visiting museums, watching red sunsets in the prairie.

Dislikes: everything kitsch. Loud music. Custom ringtones. Fish. Evil.


A brief note on design: I noticed that the most powerful Senshi wear knee-high boots and use a staff (Saturn, Pluto, and even Sailor Moon). And since the Lion is considered to be one of the most powerful signs in the zodiac, I thought it was just natural that she had those elements too.

Now, for the technical part….

Software: PaintTool SAI for the Lineart, and Photoshop for the colouring. I only used default Photoshop brushes, and just one plug-in (Alien Skin’s Eye Candy) for the “chrome” effect on metallic parts.

With a big Thank You to for her useful advices and comments.

Time spent: hmm… I didn’t keep track, but since I got to listen all my Pink Floyd albums and bootlegs while drawing her… well over 80 full hours.

This was made using only a mouse, nothing other than a mouse, and just a mouse. No tablet was used.

And yes, my hand and wrist are numb, and I may not draw/colour anything again for some weeks (or maybe months).

I entered the contest just for the joy of participating, and it comes as a bit of surprise to me to have reached so far.

It was a great experience. Very funny. And I surely learnt a lot from seeing all the other artists and for the feedback recieved.

SAILOR LEO

Esta fue mi entrada para el concurso de “Sailor Zodiac contest”: [link]

La idea era crear una Sailor Scout de acuerdo con el signo zodiacal de uno. Y aunque no me gusta el zodiaco ni la astrología en general, sí me encanta el universo Sailor Moon y también toda la imaginería que rodea a Leo. Y siendo yo mismo un Leo, es apenas natural que sepa algo de mi propio signo, aunque rara vez (nunca) lea el horóscopo.

De cualquier modo, el concurso me tentó, y aunque *realmente* no tenía tiempo para dedicarle, decidí hacerlo sólo por el puro placer y la diversión de hacerlo.

Supongo que debí dedicarle más tiempo, y mi falta de experiencia se nota. Este es solo mi segundo coloreado digital, y mi primero usando un boceto/trazado original mío. Creo que habría resultado mejor si hubiera tenido más tiempo, pero sobre todo si realmente supiera dibujar. Hay cosas del coloreado que no me gustan, y sé que algunos efectos especiales no se lograron adecuadamente. Además hubo elementos relacionados con el signo Leo que no usé. (OK, ya adivinaron: soy un tremendo e incurable perfeccionista).

Y para no hacer la cuestión más larga, aquí está ella:

ESTADÍSTICAS:

ATAQUES: En realidad tiene tres técnicas de ataque:
Rugido Mortal, que es muy parecido al “Grito Mortal” de Sailor Pluto, ya que ellas aprendieron y desarrollaron la misma técnica al tiempo cuando eran niñas y estaban en el kindergarten. Este ataque es raramente usado, pues los enemigos suelen escapar antes, al ver cómo los ojos rojos de Leo empiezan a brillar.
Brillo de Protección del Girasol la caulk es una técnica defensive que puede abarcar de 2 – 15 metros para proteger a Leo o a cualquier otra persona cercana a ella de un ataque enemigo.
Garras Luminosas de Supernova, el más grande y mortífero de sus ataques. Es una técnica de destrucción total que se usa sólamente como último recurso. Aquí, una gran explosion de supernova se origina desde su corazón, destruyendo y purificando todo mal en un radio de 1 año-luz. Esto no afecta a las otras Sailor Scouts o a personas de corazón puro. Pero sí hace que leo se auto-inmole (ella renacerá de nuevo desde el núcleo interno de la estrella que queda después de la explosión supernova). Afortunadamente nunca ha habido necesidad de usarlo.

Le gusta: todo lo que es elegante. La música clásica, visitar museos, ver atardeceres rojos en la pradera.

No le gusta: lo que sea de mal kitsch. La música estruendosa, los ringtones personalizados. El pescado. La maldad.

Breve nota sobre el diseño: Noté que las Sailor Scouts más poderosas usan botas altas y un báculo (Saturno, Plutón, e incluso la misma Sailor Moon). Y ya que el León es considerado uno de los signos más poderosos, me pareció apenas natural que ella también tuviera esos elementos.

En cuanto a la parte técnica….

Software: PaintTool SAI para el trazado de líneas, y Photoshop para el coloreado. Sólo usé pinceles nativos de Photoshop, y solo un plug-in (Alien Skin’s Eye Candy) para el efectode “cromo” en partes metálicas.

Tiempo: hmm… no llevé registro, pero considerando que esuché todos mis álbumes de Pink Floyd y todas las grabaciones no-oficiales… fácilmente unas 80 horas.

Se hizo solamente con mouse, nada más que un mouse, y solamente eso. No usé tableta digitalizadora.

Y sí, mi mano y mi muñeca están muy afectadas. No creo que dibuje/coloree nada en las próximas semanas (o tal vez meses).

Yo entré al concurso sólo por el placer de participar, y de algún modo me sorprende haber llegado tan lejos.

Fue una experiencia genial,y muy divertida. De verdad que estoy aprendiendo mucho al ver a los demás artistas y también de los comentarios recibidos.
